Tadley R.F.C. - News

Tadley 10 v Chipenham 29

On a perfect day for rugby the Pump Technology Sponsored Tadley entertained unbeaten Chippenham at Red Lane. Tadley were feeling confident at the beginning of the game. This confidence showed with the Tadley forwards dominating a much bigger Chippenham pack with the backs making use of quality ball they were receiving.

This pressure showed as Chippenham gave away a penalty just outside there 22 which Raymond struck between the posts to take the lead.

Chippenham then composed themselves when centre Gary Champion found a gap in the Tadley defence to set up a ruck 30 metres out. The Chippenham forwards who were using the blind side to great effect managed to score the first try of the game through flanker Scott Sherrat. The conversion was missed to make the score 5-3.

Tadley did not let this dampen their spirits as the forwards, giving their best performance of the season, winning ball in all areas of the park, which was allowing the Tadley backs to pressure the opposing line, with a fine performance from ex Chippenham centre Edd Smith, who continually pressed his ex team members defence. The front row of Swaddling, Choules and Lowe were very impressive winning scrums against the head and Murray and Harris outstanding in the line out.

The Tadley backs, trying to spread the play, then saw Champion intercept Raymonds pass to have a clear run to score underneath the posts which was converted. This took the score to 12-3 at half time.

After half time Tadley tried to keep the pressure on Chippenham but it was Chippenham who took the upper hand when winger Tom Boreham side stepped his way underneath the posts. This was converted by Lee Audis making the score 19-3. The game then became slightly scrappy with both sides making handling errors and giving away penalties.

Chippenham finally took control of the game when Sherrat powered his way over the line to score his second try of the game, 24-3. It was then Tadley’s turn to power over the line. With Swaddling making way for Grierson in the front row and Summers for Vatcher it was Tadley's turn to show their strength up front when Man of the Match Rob Murray carried three Chippenham defenders over the line to score his first try for the club which was converted by Raymonds. 24-10 to Chippenham.

Raymond then made way for Kevin Simpson allowing Dennison to move to the fly half position. Tadley tried to run the ball from their 22 when the ball was turned over by Chippenham for Champion to score his second try of the game.

The final score ended 29-10.

This was an impressive performance by Tadley with the forwards winning a lot of possession and the backs looking confident. Tadley must now take this forward into the next game and start to string some results together.
